Also known as Galileo Galilei Airport, after the famous Scientist who was a native of Pisa, Pisa airport is located at San Giusto district, a kilometer away from Pisa city Center. It was first developed in the 1930s and 1940s for the military and is one of Tuscany’s main airports. The Airport can be accessed from the central railway station which is just 2 km from the airport, and it has its own railway station. The guests can also find different train and bus connections to and fromthe Airport as well as to and from the Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence. The airport has been used by the Italian air force and acts as a base for different military outfits alongside other civilian operations. It was also used in the World war to as a base for different military units such as United States Army Air Forces’ 15th Air Force.
The growth of the Airport
It was Italy’s fastest growing airport in 2006 and 2007, with an increase in the number of passengers. In 2006 the number went up by 30% while in 2007, it rose by 24%. Out of the top 15 airports in Italy, Pisa Airport is the 11th busiest port and it handled up to 3.9 million passengers in 2008 and 4.0 million passengers in 2008, indicating a growth of 1.4%. The airport hosts over 18 airlines and countless destinations including the major cities of Europe and America as well as other parts of the world.
Pisa airport is located at a 6-feet elevation and has two runways paved by use of asphalt. The visitors will find different facilities within the airport including airport parking. Pisa Airport has four large parking areas and one for the passenger coaches. The airport is also designed to give access to the disabled people as well as those with reduced mobility. Incidents and Accidents
In Nov 2009, there was an accident at Pisa airport involving the Italian Air Force Lockheed LC-130j Hercules of 46 Aerobrigata Crashed just after take off and the crew of five members was killed.
